Oscar 2011 Red Carpet

Another award season has come to a close, I can't believe it has gone by so fast! The Oscars are like the Super Bowl of Hollywood and the fashion is usually just as important as who takes home the statuette. There wasn't anything super daring on the carpet this year - lots of nude/illusion dresses and pretty pastels. Some stars that usually come out with amazing gowns failed to wow me this year, unfortunately. Here are my picks for best and worst dressed:

Faves:

Elie Saab

Calvin Klein

Gucci

Marchesa

Rodarte

Marchesa

Giorgio Armani

Monique Lhuillier

Not So Faves:

Armani Prive

Chanel

Dolce & Gabbana

Traveling Must-Haves

Since I'm in my last year of school and working from home, I wanted to take advantage of the time I have left to travel to a few places over the spring, summer and hopefully fall (we are planning a NYC trip on the weekend of 9/11, for the 10 year anniversary). Here is my summer outfit of choice: shorts, t-shirt or tank top and flip-flops. Yes, I'm a Californian through and through. This summer I want to step out of my box and wear cute, but comfortable, things when I travel. Since the summer clothes are finally making their way to the racks around here I thought I'd share some things I think would be perfect for traveling.

**Side note: Here in Denver, it's the strangest thing. BATHING SUITS are on the racks after Christmas. It's snowing outside and there's nothing but tank tops and bathing suits for sale. Good luck finding a sweater. Seriously.**

Target $18

Target $30

Lauren Conrad for Kohl's $50

Nordstrom $59

New Fave Purchases

A couple of weeks ago, I got a Target gift card for my birthday! I'm ob-sessed with Target and having some free money was perfect :)

Here are a few of the things I bought:

$29

I've been wanting the Clarisonic for a while now, but the hefty price tag never seemed like a good purchase for me. Recently, Oil of Olay came out with a super inexpensive version and I was dying to try it. I watched tons of reviews on YouTube to make sure it was something I wanted to buy. Simply put, I love it. The vibration gives me a face massage and the soft bristles clean and smooth out my pores. A small sample exfoliating cleanser comes with the kit and I like it, though you can use whatever your favorite face products are too.

$15

I'm addicted to products that give me a facial-like treatment at home. This sauna mask heats up on contact, giving your face a warm, gentle cleansing. The warmth opens up the pores and the product deep cleanses skin in just a couple of minutes. I like the product because it feels creamy enough to add moisture to my skin while working to clean it at the same time. LOVE.

$10

Since I'm no longer living near the coast (insert sad face here) I'm obsessed with things that smell tropical. This gentle body scrub is made with coconut oil, apricot seeds and hibiscus. It smells delicious and gets me in the mood for summer. Since the scrub consists of apricot seeds, it's important to remember not to use it on the face or anything...that's just dangerous!

$4

These polishes are bright, fun and inexpensive. I love them because they dry quickly and don't leave annoying air bubbles like some other brands do. I need to brighten up the few remaining weeks of winter so I went with these!

New Motivation

It's been a while since I've blogged. My willpower for blogging comes and goes, but lately I've been feeling like it's something I should be putting more effort into. Today I had the pleasure of meeting this fabulous lady, The Pioneer Woman and someone in the audience asked her about blogging. She said that it just started with a simple template (like this one) and it evolved into what it is now. That struck me in particular, because I think I've spent so much time worrying about whether or not I was sticking to a single topic or theme on my blog.

For those of you who have been reading my blog, I thank you! I'm planning on taking the foundation I've already placed and building on it with a little bit of everything that I love or enjoy in my daily life.

Glamour is everywhere.

SAG Awards Red Carpet

In case you didn't know, last night the Screen Actors Guild Awards were on! These awards are often very different from the Golden Globe, both in the red carpet fashions and award winners. There were tons of dresses I loved last night, with only a few that didn't do it for me.

Red Carpet Ready!

There were plenty of glamorous looks on the red carpet tonight! If you want to re-create them, Temptalia is sharing how each star got her show-stopping look. Here are some of my faves from the night:

“January’s look was all about strength – there was nothing demure about it! I wanted to go for a super strong brow, and a high gloss red lip.  90′s supermodel meets old Hollywood glamour!” — Rachel Goodwin

Makeup“The makeup was simple with two strong elements.  I prepped her skin with CHANEL Sublimage Concentrate. I then sculpted her cheeks with CHANEL Bronzing Makeup Base.  On her lids, I used a wash of champagne coloured shadow, CHANEL Soft Touch Eyeshadow in Liberty.  I created a strong, bold defined brow with the CHANEL Perfect Brows palette, and applied two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir.  Finally, I knew I wanted to go for a glossy red lip as opposed to a matte red, to keep the look fresh and not too retro.  I used an amazing red gloss, CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Excess, to complete January’s strong red carpet look.”

NARS worked with celebrity makeup artist Vanessa Scali to create Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks’ exuberant look for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. “I had this vision of a big, doe-eyed, lashy look from the late 70s and early 80s. To keep it modern, I kept the skin dewy with shimmering eyes and added a pop of matte texture on the lips,” said Vanessa
Face:  PRO-PRIME Multi Protect Primer With SPF, Sheer Glow Foundation, Copacabana Illuminator, Desire Blush
Eyes:  Calanque Trio Eyeshadow, Hollywoodland Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo, Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara
Lips: Vesuvio Pure Matte Lipstick

NARS worked with celebrity makeup artist Spencer Barnes to create presenter Olivia Wilde’s glowing look for the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards.
“Olivia’s look was inspired by images she collected of what she refers to as ‘the French girl.’  I wanted her skin to be fresh and clean with eyes that extended outward.  Touches of rose gold and sheer pink-veiled lips completed her youthful coquette-ish look,” Spencer said.
Face:  Sheer Glow Foundation, PRO-PRIME Multi Protect Primer With SPF, Copacabana Illuminator, Amour Blush
Eyes: PRO-PRIME Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, Nouveau Monde Duo Eyeshadow, Hollywoodland Soft Touch Shadow Pencil, Mambo Eyeliner Pencil, Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara
Lips:  Fantasia Lipliner Pencil, Madere Pure Matte Lipstick, Frivolous Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil
Julia had an elegant, long black gown so we wanted the beauty look to be sophisticated and sexy, but also to keep it fresh since the red carpet is during the daytime.

We wanted her skin to be luminous and glowing so I used COVERGIRL NatureLuxe Silk Foundation for a luxurious flawless finish and then used a coral shimmer blush to give her a sunkissed glow.On the eyes I created a light smoky eye by lining the top and bottom with COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Silver Spark and applying a dark matte taupe eye shadow. I finished the eyes with two coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion. On her lips we wanted to create a deep berry pop of color so I used COVERGIRL Lip Perfection in Euphoria.

Be sure to check out Temptalia for many other looks and tutorials.
